Kinfolk - Volume 4

I have been in love with Kinfolk magazine since its inception. In fact, before I'd ever heard of it I daydreamed of a beautiful entertaining magazine that felt more authentic to gatherings, craft, and beauty than anything you can find on the newsstands. Come to think of it I'm pretty sure I wrote about it when it first came out.

Anyway - Last winter Karen and I were fortunate enough to write / style / shoot (I wrote / we styled / she shot) a piece for them. Truth be told it was for their summer issue and we shot it in the dead of winter. In fact, I took at cab before sunrise to brooklyn in December so we could catch the first morning light, and I ever stripped down to a t-shirt for a shot.

It is a tiny little story but I am so honored to be including among so many super talented creative people. I dream of a life where I can do such a thing on a regular basis. For now, Ill ride this high for a while. Kinfolk can be purchased here.

On Writing + 3 Peaks.

There are a lot of "free time" creative activities I have high hopes for this month. I think with all the information on the internet, and accessibility we all get sucked into spending too much time looking at others work, and not enough time generating our own (in any field). Working with my hands for the last 6 weeks has reminded me of how important the continuous personal work is along side the outside inspiration. And now that I'm not confined to very specific parameters, there are the same three fields I come back to :: writing, drawing and photography. All separate from Interior Architecture, but all related fields that will make any presentation I do for the next two years or the rest of my life inherently better.

Last week while organizing my apartment to leave it for a spell, I came across an notebook where I had been attempting to keep my writing up. Here is an unfinished entry that relates oh so well to yesterday's post ::

The NOLS Three Peaks Ranch in Boulder Wyoming (population 75) might not be every one's idea of a vacation. The bedroom I was given is fondly referred to as "Meth Lab One," and I'm sharing the house with not only three fabulous females and two great dogs, but also an unknown number of furry grey friends we know as mice. Or rodents. The ranch, Home seasonally to 75 horses, a number of staff, and a larger number of dogs, caters to many visitors---instructors, students, passersby, friends, and family. Their average day collectively begins with an 8 am meeting in the cookhouse followed by bringing the horses up from the lower pasture where they've grazed for the night.
My first morning visiting my sister here we walked through the dusty sage riddled fields down to where this palette of ponies calmly enjoys the morning sun. Stirred by our presence, as routine as it is, they begin their saunter up towards the corral. I look around at present company--I'm the only New Yorker + only person without jeans and a pearl snap shirt on. The many colors of the ponies mix and separate, mix and separate, as they catch up with one-another, and some pull ahead. Like creamer slowly being poured into coffee swirling about, their shades of taupe, brown, white, gray, and infinite in betweens pass by. To even attempt to describe their coloring with words would be an insult to their beauty, like the color of a red wine stain on a white tablecloth, or its residue in a glass, no paint chip name or panetone color could ever do them justice. There is Denali and Luke, Aloha, Cola, Ducky, Pepsi. There is Tom, Whip, Red, Gannet, and Andy. Seventy-five in total, I can't name but 3 by face, but they know them all. Their names, their personalities, how they pick their feet up, their homes prior to three peaks.

The Dust rises behind them as they trot through the fragrant sage and into this tiny dirt lot. Never lured by food or false promises, they simply go where their friends are going, and where they were yesterday. The sun strengthens and erases the nighttime chill, felt only minutes ago.

And The Last ...

Central Park South traffic light at dusk.

A birthday celebration for two in the West Village.

Did I fool you with this last one ? Did you think this was New England ? Not yet ... This was taken (by a friend, not me !) in Montauk last weekend at their point. It was a perfect early morning, sitting with best friends on a piece of driftwood, watching boats in the distance while the sun glittered and danced on the water. It was a lucky + special way to spend my last New York weekend.

This weekend I'll be somewhere equally as beautiful -- Kennebunkport, Maine. I hope you're all somewhere special with special people. x

Christmas Lillies

A quiet Holiday moment as I stood in line at Stumptown recently. I don't even think they are meant to me holiday, but with their hint of red sitting on brass they felt it. I loved the half full glass of water at their side.

Hope everyone has a day of digesting, turkey leftovers, and more family.

Moment.

Sunday morning I was running to yoga. Okay, maybe not a full on trot but a vigorous walk. It was 9:59 and class started at 10:00 (turns out, bad idea to show up this late. Word to the wise. I basically shared a mat with the poor man next to me. I don't think he knew he'd be spooned until I dropped my knees to the left for that nice spinal twist). As I rushed down Broadway this perfect leaf in its perfect shade of yellow, laid perfectly on the asphalt and I stopped. I stopped, knowing I had less than a minute to make it 3 blocks, into a building, through a fingerprint scanner, through a turnstile and into a classroom. I stopped. For a leaf. I stopped and actually took my phone out of my pocket to take a picture. Of a leaf. On a sidewalk.

I wish I had good reason behind this. But I just liked it. And I liked it enough that it stopped whatever life drama was running through my head at the time. Sometimes when I see these things I don't physically stop, but my mind stops and focuses in on it. I realized Sunday most things I share on here are moments like this of some form. Images that stop me, words that stop me, products that stop me. Moments carved out in my day because my eyes, ears, heart, responds.

This was an extremely long winded way (are you surprised ?) of saying, I might share some of these moments with less explanation. Just cause they stopped me, and maybe you'll like them too.
